Wow, I Don't Know What To Say...Maybe I Do Have A Pulse!

As most of you know I have thought about throwing in my cards for greener pastures.  I didn't expect much of any thought on what type of comments on my blog from all I have met through the internet.  Not only did I get a lot of comments, but I got about a dozen emails from people who I have never heard from on my blog but who secretly read.  All that gave me a shot in the arm that I didn't expect, and hearing stories of others who have had these lulls, it does give me much needed hope.

I ended up laying wide away all night just thinking on what to do and where I could go.  I do feel great knowing that there are so many people out there that enjoy my random thoughts about nothing, that made my year so far!  Thanks!  Today I wrote down my pros and cons about collecting so I can really see if my heart is still in this.  Here is what I came up with:

1.  Collect ONLY baseball cards.
2.  Getting rid of all hockey, football and basketball cards.    That should reduce my hoard by about 30,000, so if you want to lay claims on certain players or teams for trade let me know.
3.   I need to get rid of cards I have doubles, triples...etc.  For example, does one really need 25+ 1987 Topps Barry Bonds Rookie Cards?
4.   Buy less blaster boxes, more hobby.  I need to stop buying $20 boxes of crap with the same cards over and over again, just buy a damn hobby box.  That retail card isle is like crack to me, I can't go to any store without hitting that isle a few times a visit.  9 times out of 10, I'm let down and wish I had that $20 back.  If I goto Wal-Mart three times a week, that could be 3 or 4 blaster boxes...may not get any thing good for $80, or I can just buy one hobby box for less.
All said and done, maybe a divorce isn't what the doctor ordered, but maybe just by me venting that there have been some things about the hobby and sports has gotten me down.  Maybe just sometimes venting every now and then may just get that monkey off my back, instead of carrying it around till I'm sick of it.

This month I am going to make a much much better trade bait page in efforts to get rid of all those extra boxes of cards to help reduce my collection into something much more manageable.   Also, I will still be doing my breaks monthly...and thanks again everyone for that VERY much needed jolt in my collection arm. As for my health, I did get some bad news about the progression of my illness but I am combating that with stopping drinking ALL soda including diet, no junk food, no fast food, eating healthy and exercising   I don't really think I'm over weight, I'm 6' 1" and weighed 260, but I needed to make some real lifestyle changes.  In just TWO weeks I have lost 20 pounds, and now at 240!  No, losing weight will not make my illnesses change, but it could slow down the pace of progression, plus it will just make me feel better.  Me feeling better would make me able to hopefully once again get out and do much more with my wife and kids.

For those who are waiting or have been waiting for my Feb Break Details...I will have them posted later tonight!  Thanks to the ones who were in the past two months breaks, sorry Buckstore for the mix up with having left off the customs label, you will get your cards by early next week with some extras!

Stan Musial Statue Visit

Today I took my daughter Savannah to the Stan Musial statue and makeshift memorial today.  It was eerie to see all the security and police presence just standing around like the president was here.  Plus it was sad to know that he will not be here for 2013 opening day.

Stan "The Man" and A Small Health Break

During this in between baseball lull right now, I'm going to take some time and work on working harder on my health/diet/weight loss.  I am still here reading others blogs, I am still here for trades, I am still going to do monthly breaks, but just wanted to let you all know.  Recently I had to make several choices after my doctor told me my health/kidney issues were getting worse. For every one, I am still updating my Zistle profile, and ALL cards I have 2 or more of are up for trade!  Just look for the Zistle link on the top of my blog.  It is updated almost daily so check back often!   I am still doing the Feb. break, look for a post next week about that!  Last month's break members should get their cards in the next day or two.  Feel free to email me any time for trades jasonjasonp12@gmail (dot) com

Before I go for tonight, being a born and raised in St. Louis I want to share a few items I have that I display proudly.  Even though I am a bigger Rockies fan, I was a Cardinals fan first and still hold them dear to me.  I am glad that the Cardianls had such a wonderful man as Stan "The Man" Musial in their organization.  Stan, you lived a long great life, you will always be remembered, and always missed!

Is it Carlos Corporan or the Green Goblin

Sometime we run into a card that makes us think of something else.  Today I pulled this card from a 2012 Topps Series 1 pack and thought of the Green Goblin from the comic Spiderman.  Both Corporan and the Goblin have futuristic looking armor, and are striking the same catching pose.  Look at it and judge for yourself.

Three Denver Broncos Added (1 Relic/2 AU)

I added three Denver Broncos cards for relatively cheap, to include adding my second Tim Tebow Relic.  Okay before you all say, REALLY...Tebow?  I agree with you all, he isn't a great quarterback, but for three years there was no bigger name in sports.  Will Tebow ever quarterback again in the NFL, maybe not, but there is one thing for sure.  Tebowmania was HUGE and having a few relics to show my kids when I try to explain why Tebow was so huge even though he only started a hand full of games.  On top of getting the Tebow relic, it also has a rookie relic of the Broncos star wide receiver, Demaryius Thomas.  Not too shabby!

Then I added two autos that have an unfortunate connection.  Broncos 2009 6th round draft pick, Tom Brandstater was drafted as their backup quarterback.  Broncos 2009 5th round draft pick was a wide receiver, Kenny McKinley.  If you don't remember Kenny McKinley committed suicide in 2010 after an injury threatened his NFL career.   Brandstater and McKinley were roommates and Brandstater tried to help McKinley by borrowing him thousands when he got in trouble with gambling. Not a great story, but none the less puts a dark story/shadow over a dark few years for the Broncos.

#49/299

Being a Broncos fan, these three cards hold some stories during the 2009-2010 seasons where there was nothing going right for the Broncos.  This shows that to some, these cards are commons, but to collectors who like to research cards, these cards hold treasure that can't be measured with money.

Pete Rose Series: Hits And Mrs.

TLC's newest hit reality family is someone who has a lot of controversy in the sports world, Pete Rose.  Pete Rose of course holds the MLB hits record, but is snubbed from the Hall of Fame for something that happened after his playing days.  There are several differences that we can draw a line on between steroid players verses Pete Rose.  Rose at least we assume he played clean and he only gambled during his years as a manager.  Now we have players who have been linked or accused of using steroids who have an impact on records and they are allowed to be on the Hall of Fame ballot.  Will any of these steroid linked players make the hall?  Who knows.  I think the MLB should consider the career from 1961-1986 of Rose on the ballot, and throw out his years as manger.  Just like Bonds, if Rose was put on the ballot today, he still may not make it in the Hall because of notion of gambling in his baseball career.

The TLC reality show "Hits And Mrs.", which premiered last night, I feel is nothing more than a way for Rose to reach out to a broader audience to try to get into the hall.  After watching both new episodes, totaling near 43 minutes after taking out commercials, Rose talks about wanting to go into the Hall eight times.  It wasn't much of a reality show as it was more of him trying to show his hurt from being thrown out of baseball and his love of the game.  Then half the second episode is Pete talking to 8 year olds like they are salty veteran ballplayers.  Finally, throw in the extreme, he is engaged to a woman model over half his age.

In the past two years we have seen a huge boom in Pete Rose Leaf products popping up everywhere, to even include almost all retail stores.  Rose who is 71 may be trying to show his soft side around the same time many of the steroid era players hit the ballots.  Rose cleverly states in his show that he earned all of his hits and didn't bet till after he was a player.  He also points out he lives in Las Vegas, but don't worry America, he no longer gambles.

Who knows right now if or when Pete will ever make the Hall, one thing is for sure, he is going to do whatever it takes for the MLB to respond to his pleas.  If I had a vote, I would strongly consider a vote for Rose, and I think someday he will make it in.  Major League baseball has to address the many issues with the past two decades and steroids.  This may soften the league's stance on his lifetime ban.

Will I watch the last four shows, sure I will.  I will just mute my TV and watch because of his model finance.

Great Names In Baseball: Win

Back in the early days of baseball, players had some really cool nick names, such as "Little Looie" Apparicio, and "Rapid Robert" Feller.  Sometimes there are players who pop up who just have EPIC baseball names, and one player who has the best pitching name is: WIN REMMERSWAAL.  Okay, I understand his real name is actually Wilhelmus (he is from the Netherlands), but really, how much better would the PA announcement be to hear: "Now pitching for the Red Sox, Win Remmerswaal" verses "Now pitching for the Red Sox, Wilhelmus Abraham Remmerswaal

1981 Donruss #98
1981 Topps
Although Win Remmerswaal had the great pitching name, he only had 3 career major league victories.  Today we have a pitcher with a not so great pitching name, Homer Bailey.  In the 80s we had Bob Walk.  If I was a pitcher and had a choice of names I could have, either Homer or Win, I'm all in with the name Win!

I am going to "make up" some cool pitching names:

Balk McGee
Strike Wallace
Perfect Game
Ball Inside
Canon Hunter
Fire Anderson
Wild Thing Vaughn...hum, actually I think this name was used in a movie!

Terrible Hats Of The 2K

Yesterday I did a post about a few terrible hats of the 80s and how could I forget to add this recent bad hat from 2002.  This card is of the starting pitcher that year of the Colorado Rockies, Denny Neagle.  It looks like he is doing bunting drills at spring training.  As what I am told and read about pitchers at spring training is that they take their batting practice after the regulars leave the area.  Not really sure if Denny intended this to be used as his baseball card, but it is history now...he is in my MLB terrible hats hall of fame!  Though Neagle had a bad look, it still not as bad as Ramsey.  Neagle forgot to keep his hat on under his helmet.

FIRST PLACE!

Joe Avg Collector - February Group Break Preview

February Group Break Theme: 1979-1989

As most of you know I like to have fun with my breaks, I like to really have fun and try to get a lot of cards to everyone.  This month I am going to break cards from the years 1979-1987.  Of course there will be no hits like autos or relics, but between 1979-1989 there are a TON or key rookies and stars!  Here is a breakdown of cards that are going to be broke.  There will be two wax boxes and the rest will be loose packs.  I tried to pick packs with a chance to get a key rookie, for example we will have one 1979 Topps pack and will chance getting an Ozzie Smith RC and a pack of 89 Upper Deck and maybe scoring a Griffey RC.

1987 Donruss Wax Box
1986 Donruss Wax Box
1985 Donruss Pack
2 - 1987 Fleer Packs
1979 Topps Pack
1981 Topps Pack
1984 Fleer Pack
1982 Donruss Pack
1983 Donruss Pack
1983 Fleer Pack
1982 Topps Pack
1983 Topps Pack
1981 Fleer Pack
1984 Topps Pack
1981 Donruss Pack
2-1989 Upper Deck Lo Pack

This break since there are NO recent expansion teams listed, we are going to be looking at having 14 openings, and there will be two tiers.  You will pick one team in each tier.  I am looking at around (est) $13 for two teams.  I am going to start taking team picks on Feb 1.  For about $13 you can get a chance of a lot of stars and HOF rookies!  It is a big change of pace, this is a perfect break for team collectors who want or need cards from 79-89!

Terrible Hat Cards of the 80s

One of the things I noticed about early 1980s players were, they loved to wear their hats under their batting helmets.  I don't know why all of a sudden players thought that this look was cool.  The first player that always come to mind was the Detroit Tigers 2B, Lou Whitaker.  In almost every photo I see of Whitaker in a batting helmet he has his hat on under.  I thought he was the poster boy for wearing hats under batting helmets...until I pulled this 1981 Topps #361 Mike Ramsey from a repack.

At first I thought, maybe he is a catcher, but NOPE he is 2b-ss.  Think back to all the old Topps airbrush cards out there, surprised they didn't airbrush that #4 with a bad Cardinals logo.  Just look at how GREAT that look is!  This was the same years that the Cardinals came out with the Brockabrella, an invention from the Cardinals great Lou Brock.  It was finally sported on a baseball card in 1984 by Fleer.  The one thing I love about the early 80s baseball cards is, the fashion these players had!

Here is what it would look like if Topps airbrushed away his #4...notice how bad it looks!  This is about how their old airbrushed logos looked!
